How to Read
Understanding what the cast reveals
The Fundamentals
Reading a rune cast is about understanding the relationships between runes, their positions relative to the center, and how they speak to each other. Three factors shape every rune's meaning: its identity (which rune), its position (where it fell relative to center), and its orientation (upright or reversed).
Proximity to Center
The center of the cast is the most significant point. Runes that land close to center speak most directly to your question — they represent the core energies at play. Runes far from center represent background influences. Think of the cast as a solar system: the closest rune is the sun.
Upright vs Reversed (Merkstave)
A rune landing upright carries its direct, forward-flowing meaning. A reversed rune — called a merkstave — may indicate a blocked, delayed, or challenging expression of that energy. Not all runes have reversed meanings; some are symmetrical. Reversed runes are not necessarily negative — they may indicate energy turned inward.
Cardinal Directions
In a free cast, direction relative to center can carry meaning. Runes to the left often relate to the past; those to the right suggest future outcomes. Runes above center may speak to conscious awareness; those below to foundations or what is hidden. These are guidelines, not rules — intuition should always take precedence.
Spread Types
Free Cast
No fixed positions. The reading emerges from organic relationships between runes. Most open and intuitive — ideal for general readings.
Past · Present · Future
Three zones divided horizontally. Left of center: past influences. Near center: current energies. Right of center: future possibilities.
Five-Rune Cross
Center: heart of the matter. Above: obstacle. Below: foundation. Left: past influence. Right: path forward.
Nine-World Grid
Based on the nine worlds of Norse cosmology connected by Yggdrasil. Each zone brings that realm's archetypal energy to the runes that fall within it.
